Guide to Sprouting Jar Success

This time of year is great to grow sprouts. Those densely nutritious greens that are ready in about 5-7 days.  We’ve found that a mason jar fitted with a stainless steel canning ring and stainless steel screen work best and are plastic free. You can find the screens and rings from several sources online.

You’ll want to start with seed that is specifically processed for sprouting. We like brassica blends for their spiciness and great color.

Measure out about 2 tablespoons of seed into each jar. Add about 2 cups of filtered water and let the seeds soak for a few hours.

Drain the seeds and rinse again. Set them aside in a bowl screen down so they can continue to drain. Rinse them twice a day until they are a good size.

Give them a final soak and rinse in the salad spinner to remove seed hulls and unsprouted seed. Spin dry and store in a container in the refrigerator. The original jar can be used with a solid top. Sprouts should be good for 7 days.
